Network Rail Approved Concrete Cutting: What Contractors Need to Know

Working on or near the operational railway — whether on structures, tunnels, bridges, station platforms or track-side infrastructure — requires a level of approval, competency and process compliance that goes significantly beyond standard commercial construction. Principal contractors and specialist subcontractors working on Network Rail infrastructure must understand what approvals are required and how to demonstrate compliance before any works begin.

Network Rail Principal Contractor and Contractor Approval

Network Rail operates a tiered approval system for contractors working on its infrastructure. Principal contractors must hold Network Rail Principal Contractor approval, granted following assessment of the contractor’s safety management system, competency framework and insurance arrangements. Specialist subcontractors carry out intrusive works under the supervision of an approved principal contractor.

BritCut holds Network Rail approval and has carried out diamond drilling, concrete cutting, ferro scanning and GPR surveys on Network Rail infrastructure across the UK — on station structures, tunnels, bridges, retaining walls, platform edges and track-side civil structures. Our operatives hold the relevant Personal Track Safety (PTS) competencies and work within the Network Rail safe system of work.

Why Pre-Works Scanning Is Even More Critical on Railway Infrastructure

Railway structures frequently contain complex reinforcement arrangements, embedded electrical conduits, bonding cables, traction power systems and historic service installations that are poorly documented. Pre-works scanning on railway infrastructure is not just good practice — it is a fundamental safety requirement. BritCut carries out ferro scanning and GPR surveys on all railway structures before any intrusive works, often as part of the same mobilisation as the drilling or cutting works.

Working in Possession

Works on or near the operational railway require possession of the relevant track or line — a scheduled window during which the railway is handed over to the engineering team and normal traffic is suspended. Possessions are planned weeks or months in advance, are fixed in duration, and cannot be extended. The consequence of not completing the required works within a possession — a failed possession — is extremely costly. BritCut operatives are experienced in working to possession timescales and understand the critical path pressures that define railway infrastructure works.

GPR Concrete Scanning: What It Finds and When to Use It

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) concrete scanning is one of the most powerful non-destructive investigation tools available to the construction industry. Unlike ferro scanning — which is specifically tuned to detect steel — GPR can detect almost anything embedded within or beneath a concrete structure. This guide explains how GPR works, what it finds, and the […]

What Is GPR and How Is It Used in Construction?

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) uses pulses of electromagnetic energy to detect and map objects buried within concrete, soil and other materials. In construction it has become an essential tool for pre-works surveys, structural investigation and utility detection — providing information about what lies beneath the surface that cannot be obtained by any other non-destructive method. […]

Concrete Scanning Before Core Drilling: Why It’s Essential

Core drilling into reinforced concrete is one of the most common tasks in construction — creating penetrations for pipes, cables, drainage, and M&E services. It looks straightforward. But drilling blind into a concrete slab or wall without knowing what’s inside is one of the most avoidable sources of programme delays, structural damage, and serious safety […]
