How to Choose a Diamond Drilling Contractor: What to Look For

On complex projects or in sensitive structures, the quality of the diamond drilling contractor matters enormously. Here’s what to look for when selecting a specialist.

Accreditations

A credible contractor should hold CHAS (or equivalent SSIP pre-qualification), ConstructionLine registration, and adequate public liability insurance. For any work on or near the railway, Network Rail approval is non-negotiable. Check accreditations are current and in scope — they are a floor, not a ceiling.

Operative Competence

All operatives should hold valid CSCS cards. For diamond drilling specifically, the relevant qualification is NVQ Level 2 in Diamond Drilling and Sawing — not a generic construction labourer card. For specialist environments, additional competency cards and training records should be available on request.

Do They Scan Before They Drill?

This is the most important question. A contractor who drills reinforced concrete without pre-works ferro scanning is taking an unacceptable risk with the structure and with health and safety. The best contractors carry scanning equipment on the same vehicle as drilling equipment. Ask directly: do you carry out ferro scanning before every core drill? If the answer is “only when asked” — look elsewhere.

Tier 1 Track Record and Responsiveness

A contractor who works regularly for Skanska, Sir Robert McAlpine, ISG and similar Tier 1 organisations has demonstrated they can meet the standards major contractors require. Also ask about attendance lead times — a contractor who can’t attend within 24–48 hours creates programme risk. BritCut provides same-day attendance for urgent pre-works surveys. GPR Concrete Scanning: What It Finds and When to Use It

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) concrete scanning is one of the most powerful non-destructive investigation tools available to the construction industry. Unlike ferro scanning — which is specifically tuned to detect steel — GPR can detect almost anything embedded within or beneath a concrete structure. This guide explains how GPR works, what it finds, and the […]

Network Rail Approved Concrete Cutting: What Contractors Need to Know

Working on or near the operational railway — whether on structures, tunnels, bridges, station platforms or track-side infrastructure — requires a level of approval, competency and process compliance that goes significantly beyond standard commercial construction. Principal contractors and specialist subcontractors working on Network Rail infrastructure must understand what approvals are required and how to demonstrate […]

What Is GPR and How Is It Used in Construction?

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) uses pulses of electromagnetic energy to detect and map objects buried within concrete, soil and other materials. In construction it has become an essential tool for pre-works surveys, structural investigation and utility detection — providing information about what lies beneath the surface that cannot be obtained by any other non-destructive method. […]
